Like her paper works, Usami’s paintings draw on the artist’s Japanese heritage with motifs that recall traditional Japanese textile design. She compares the use of exuberant line and colour in her work to the sense of freedom and adventure she experiences when exploring new parts of London, and it is born of the artist’s attempts at escape and discovery within the familiar and the everyday.
