The back of this panel is marked with a red wax seal that reads ‘Vente Dauzat’. John and Joséphine Bowes probably acquired this painting directly from the sale of Dauzat’s studio in February 1869 shortly after his death. It may be one of the works noted in the sales catalogue in lots 153–160 described as ‘diverse études’ (various studies), which sold for 11–105 francs each. In this small study Dauzat pays particular attention to the musculature and poise of the goats, as well as to the texture of their coats and shape of their horns.
