This sketch is on the verso of Bartolommeo’s drawing for a painted altarpiece entitled, 'Madonna and Child with Saints'. Unlike the Madonna and Child drawing, this sketch of two figures has not been linked to a larger work and does not bear a relationship with the altarpiece. Nevertheless, it serves to demonstrate Fra Bartolommeo’s confident spontaneity in his sketching and mastery in his handling of the chalk. The recto of this sketch is listed under the same accession number in the Barber Collection.
