The artist based his paintings on sketches he made on the spot. This painting shows the lagoons near Venice. Venice itself is partially obscured by mist. Howard made frequent trips to Italy. Like many artists at the time he was encouraged by Ruskin's writings about Italian art and architecture which include 'The Stones of Venice' (published 1851–1853).
