Harry Burton's photograph documents a pair of statue groups, each portraying Tutankhamun carried on the back of a panther. Howard Carter later recorded the context of how they were found, 'along the south wall [of the Treasury], extending from east to west, stood a large quantity of black, sinister, shrine-like chests, all closed and sealed save one, the folding doors of which had fallen apart revealing statuettes of the king, swathed in linen, standing on the backs of black leopards'. Most of the statues and other objects from Tutankhamun's tomb were found wrapped in linen, and some were even adorned with tiny floral collars and garlands. The purpose of these coverings was not merely protective; they encapsulate complex religious and funerary ideas and are yet to be adequately understood by modern archaeologists.
