Harry Burton took this photograph on 24th October 1925. His camera captures a rare glimpse of the burial's serenity. Burton took this photograph a short while after Howard Carter revealed Tutankhamun's inner gold coffin (Carter no. 255) for the first time in over 3,200 years. A linen shroud covers the coffin, and a folded cloth is tucked around its head, placed there by the funeral officials who also intentionally left the King's face uncovered. Around the neck is an elaborate broad floral collar composed of the seasonal flora available at the time the king's funeral took place: willow leaves, cornflowers, pomegranate leaves and nightshade berries embellished with blue disc beads. The photograph captures the survival of the delicate plants but, as Howard Carter later noted, 'although these at first appeared to be in good condition, they proved so brittle that the material broke the very instant it was touched'.
