This painting illustrates the demoralising effect of unemployment and shows a remembered scene of unemployed coal miners in a south Wales valley during the 1930s. The subject of work and of Wales's working class communities were what interested the artist, Tony Evans. Evans knew the industries of south Wales (coal mining, tinplate making and other heavy industries) well. He became a full-time artist following his retirement from industry. He experimented with a number of styles including what he referred to as 'planar' style, as seen in this painting.
