Robyn Denny studied at St Martin’s School of Art and the Royal College of Art, before teaching at Bath Academy of Art in Corsham from 1959 to 1965. As well as teaching painting, Denny was heavily involved in setting up and running the Academy’s new Visual Communications course. 'Treen 5' is an early oil painted the year after Denny graduated from the Royal College of Art, and 12 months before he started teaching at Bath Academy of Art. The painting is the fifth in a series entitled ‘Treen’, meaning from trees, or wood. ‘Treen’ is also a term for wood turning, so it perhaps refers to the rotational movement of the forms. The letter G can be made out, as can the number 3 and several arrows. These figures recur in other paintings by the artist.
