Charles Oliver was born in the USA, but attended the Royal College of Art and became Vice Principal at the Laird School of Art and a key figure in the foundation of the Wirral Society of Arts. His influence as a teacher and painter was considerable and he became an important portrait painter in Merseyside. The artist lived around the corner from this distinctive church in Tranmere (known as the 'Pepperpot') in the late 1940s.
