The figure of a larger-than-life miner is deeply carved into a 2-ton block of stone. He squats on his ‘hunkers’ in the confined space of a drift shaft with pit props to either side holding the immense weight of rock overhead. Tools of his trade lay forgotten at his feet as he gazes towards the mouth of the tunnel, towards the light, and longs for the day’s work to end. By breaking right through the stone the focus of the figure’s gaze is made bright and hopeful as our eyes naturally follow his to the backdrop of sky and hills beyond which can be seen through the small hole in the sculpture. There are also small carved blocks on either side of the path leading to the park. The sculptor worked with local school groups to create these.
