Torre Abbey can be seen through the trees to the right. The road in the distance runs along the seashore from Torquay harbour to Paignton. It was newly built in 1840 across Torre Abbey property. Henry George Cary (who owned the Abbey at that time) was so distraught at its construction that he took to his bed and died at the early age of 39.

John Rawson Walker painted quite a few local scenes in and around Torquay during the mid-Victorian period.
