Originally in the Cathedral of Valladolid, this effigy was brought to London by the dealer Lionel Harris in 1912 as an unidentified knight. The effigy was later identified as Don Juan Ruiz de Vergara, a knight of the Order of St John, who distinguished himself in battle and held senior administrative roles in the Order. The plinth was commissioned prior to its installation in the crypt of the Priory Church of the Order of St John.
