Tobias Matthay (1858–1945) is shown seated, turned to the left, half-length, looking to the viewer. He wears a dark suit, white shirt with a grey bow tie, gold spectacles and a gold band on his left 'wedding' finger, and his left arm and hand are prominently displayed by the artist, with whom he shared his Chelsea studios for a period of about five years; he moved in rich artistic and musical circles. His receding hairline is complemented by a large moustache. A student and later Professor of Piano at the Royal Academy of Music, he taught many of Britain's finest pianists including Dame Myra Hess, Harriet Cohen, Irene Scharrer, Clifford Curzon, Dame Moura Lympany, York Bowen, Harold Craxton, Vivian Langrish, Eileen Joyce, Nina Milkina and Eunice Norton, among others.
