This is an illustration for Boydell's Shakespeare. This is a portrait remnant of 'Timons of Athens' and shows a scene from Act IV, Scene 3, where Timon is visited in the woods by Alcibiades and his mistresses and gives them some of the buried treasure he has found digging for food. This fragment shows Alcibiades holding a spear in his right hand and with his chin in his left as he considers the gold offered by Timon. When the painting was restored the method adopted by Opie in his work was found. It was his habit to paint all his heads on silk and fill in the details on the canvas. Here the outlined heads painted on silk and afterwards attached to the canvas are plain to see.
