This painting was exhibited at London's Royal Academy in 1904 when the artist's interest was shifting from wild to working horses. She had trained in the realist tradition, which emphasised observation from life, and here she worked with the haulage teams dragging timber. The dynamic curve into the foreground conveys the strenuous demands made upon 'horse power' by this activity. Lucy Kemp-Welch later illustrated J. M. Dent's popular 1915 edition of 'Black Beauty' and she continued to explore the social role of horses throughout her life.
