During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, portraits were often made of colliery owners and managers. Their pose, costume and setting all emphasised their role of authority at the mine and within the community. From the second half of the twentieth century, portraits showing managers continued to be made, however their motivation and style were very different from these earlier paintings. More and more miners began to use art to capture the manager's character and his relationship with his workers. The subject of this painting is Arthur Clarkson, who was manager at Steetley Pit in Nottinghamshire. His expression is one of concentration as he listens to his men.The artist has also used the light from the other miners' cap lamps to make him the focus of the picture.
