The memorial is a smaller than life-sized statue of an airman in RAF battledress, standing gazing into the sky, coat slung over his shoulder. He looks to the sky as if watching a plane, his hand raised above his brow. The statue stands on a three-sided, rock-faced pedestal, on top a short flight of steps. It commemorates the aerodrome which was on this site. The memorial was erected and dedicated in 1997. In 2007 a full-size replica Spitfire aircraft was erected on the roundabout at the junction of Thornaby Road, Bader Avenue and Trenchard Avenue, about 500 metres to the south of the statue.
