on west face of the pedestal, an incised depiction of an eagle, with incised black capital letters below: THIS MEMORIAL / STANDS ON THE SITE OF / THORNABY / AERODROME / AND IS TO THE MEMORY / OF ALL WHO SERVED HERE / 1930-1958 / DEDICATED 8TH MAY 1997; on north-east face, an incised black filled map of the base showing the standard "A" shaped layout of the runways together with the perimeter roads; on south east face, incised in coloured paint: the depiction of the squadron badge and incised below in black letters: HOME OF / 608 NORTH RIDING / (F) SQUADRON / ROYAL AUXILLARY / AIR FORCE / OMNIBUS UNGULIS / (WITH ALL TALONS); incised in black capitals on a metal plaque attached to the wall at the rear of the statue: THIS MEMORIAL WAS UNVEILED / BY / WING COMMANDER / H.D. “HANK” COSTAIN M.B.E., R.A.F. (RTD.) / 8TH MAY, 1997 / DESIGNER: D.
