What appears to be a record sketch of this portrait by Kneller's assistant, Edward Byng, is in one of the latter's albums in the British Museum (no.4, f.12). An original by Kneller has not been located but may have been painted to mark Rowney's election as MP for Oxford in 1695, after being High Sheriff of Oxfordshire in 1691/1692 and inheriting his father's large local estates in 1694. This version was purchased by the city shortly afterwards. Also an Oxford graduate, Rowney remained a widely respected MP for the city until 1722, when succeeded by his son Thomas Rowney junior.
