Thomas Manning was a mathematician and a leading scholar of Chinese in the early nineteenth century. In his attempt to enter China via Tibet he became the first European to visit Lhasa. He finally visited Canton and Peking before returning to England. This portrait shows him at the age of about 35, before his journey to China.
