Thomas Mackay was piper to Sir James Matheson in Stornoway and is thought also to have worked as a handyman on the estate. He is shown here in full piping regalia bearing the Matheson crest on the banner and ribbons of the bass drone.

Mackay was born in Ardgary, Sutherland. Little is known of his life, the circumstances of his coming to Lewis or his musical background. His house in Stornoway, 'Willowglen', was also known as 'Piper's Cottage'. His son-in-law, John Morrison, a gamekeeper at Gress and farmer at Goathill and Galson, shared his father-in-law's musical skills. He was a founder member of the Lewis Pipe Band in 1904 and the subject of a well-known pipe tune 'John Morrison of Assynt House'.
