Thomas Killigrew was a Royalist playwright and theatre-owner. This portrait was painted in Venice where he was living as the Resident of Charles II (1630–1685), during his exile from Britain. The artist introduced an oval portrait of Charles I (1600–1649) into his portrait of Killigrew, demonstrating the sitter's loyalty to the deposed King who had been executed the previous year. Under the pile of Killigrew’s literary works on the table is a copy of 'Eikon Basilike' ('The Image of the King'), published shortly after Charles's execution and thought to have been written by Charles himself. When Charles II returned to Britain in 1660 Killigrew also returned to London from the Low Countries. He established the King's Men theatre company, and became one of the leading figures of Restoration theatre.
