At the time he was elected President in 1870, Thomas Henry Wyatt (1807–1880) was regarded as one of the most successful architects of his day, with over 400 buildings to his credit. He is almost totally forgotten today, perhaps because he could work in any style that a client requested and consequently he failed to put his stamp on a single one. Much of his work has been demolished, such as the Liverpool Exchange (1863) and the Knightsbridge Barracks (1878), London. This portrait was paid for by Sir Matthew Digby Wyatt, the sitter’s brother, rather than the Royal Institute of British Architects.
