A squat obelisk rising above four spheres, which separate it from the cornice of the panelled pedestal. Thomas Haswell was a headmaster who believed that education could help enlighten his pupils and help them overcome the decrepit conditions of the buildings and poverty of their everyday lives. The memorial stands on the site of Haswell's Royal Jubilee School, which was closed in 1935 and demolished in 1971.
