Dr Guthrie was a preacher and philanthropist, and founder of the Ragged Schools. He is depicted standing, with one hand on the shoulder of a boy and the other holding a bible. The sculpture is mounted on a tall, corniced pedestal with wreaths, torus moulding and inscriptions.
