Thomas Fynes, Lord Dacre, was married to Mary Nevill, daughter of Lord Abergavenny. In 1541 Thomas Fynes was hanged for murder. The couple had two sons and a daughter, Margaret, born in the same year. The marriage of Margaret and Samson Lennard (c.1545–1615), created a first connection between the Lennard family and the Dacre Barony, in the south of England. It is likely that this portrait was painted by a follower of Flemish painter Hans Eworth and not by the painter himself. This painting has inscribed: 'THOs. FIENNES / LORD DACRE / OF THE SOUTH' and shows the family’s coat of arms in the upper-left corner. It featured in the 1964 exhibition 'Fine Paintings from East Anglia', in Norwich. This painting has been preserved with its original frame.
