Dr Crockett was a graduate of Edinburgh University where he attained the degree of Doctor of Literature. A teacher of Social Science, he became Headmaster of William Ellis School in 1929 and went with the school in its war evacuation to Leighton Buzzard in 1939. He was a keen athlete and during the First World War served in France with the Machine Gun Corps, reaching the rank of Major. While in the army he retained his post, obtained in 1909, as second master at Holloway County School. He become Headmaster of Stockton-in-Tees Secondary School in 1923, returning to London to take up the headship of William Ellis School. He died in this post in 1942 whilst also a member of the Home Guard.
