A portrait of Carlyle in relief, facing to the left. The sculpture was probably a stage in the process of creating the Edinburgh Medal, the medal designed by Boehm for Carlyle's 80th birthday celebrations. Mounted on a board covered with red velvet fabric and held in place with four metal pins.
