Portraits of 30 Bath councillors were commissioned in 1728 by Field Marshall Wade, MP for Bath. They were displayed in Bath’s Guildhall to celebrate the achievement of the council at a time when Bath’s heyday as a fashionable Georgian resort was just beginning. This is one of only 6 that survive from the original group of portraits. The Attwoods were a powerful, successful family. They ran a lucrative plumbing and glazing company.
