The subject, Thomas Ashburne, was the son of Thomas and Frances Ashburne and sadly died quite young aged 45 in 1770. Thomas is depicted in the standard formal pose of early eighteenth-century portraiture. His right hand is tucked inside his waistcoat and he is wearing a tan jacket, a white shirt with frilled sleeves, a black tie and a green and gold brocade waistcoat with gold buttons. Under his left arm is a black three-cornered hat, and a silver topped cane. An oval frame with decorative shell shapes in each corner is painted around the outside. Thomas came from a wealthy and influential family in Farnham and so this must have been an important commission for Stephen Elmer as he was probably only starting out on his artistic career at this stage.
