A story about the painting appeared in the 'Banffshire Journal and General Advertiser', 30th April 1895: 'There has just been presented to the burgh a very fine portrait in oils of the late Mr Thomas Adam of Eden, who was a native of the town, and was three times elected Provost of Banff. The picture, which is an admirable work of art, is by Mr Adam's grand-daughter, Miss Marjorie Evans, RSW, who already holds a distinguished position as a painter, and whose reputation cannot fail to be enhanced by this excellent specimen of her powers. As a likeness, it is perfect, the combination of sagacity and kindly sympathy which formed the characteristic expression of the countenance having been most faithfully represented on the canvas. The picture, which is enclosed in a very rich and handsome gilt frame, and was placed in the Council Chamber on Wednesday, is the gift of the three sons of Provost Adam – Mr John B.
