This is a portrait of a young woman sitting on a large, carved chair and holding a wounded dove. The image is painted in light washes and fine detail.

The correspondence between George Powell and Rebecca Solomon attests to the fact that the artist was paid fifteen pounds for this work in instalments, the last of which was made in 1873.

Rebecca Solomon trained under her brother Abraham and attended Spitalfields School of Design. The work she exhibited between 1850 and 1874 was favourably reviewed and reproduced in contemporary art magazines. However, after her brother Solomon’s arrest (due to his homosexuality) her promising career came to an abrupt end.
