The nearer child has a drawing after Lawrence of William IV. The double row of portraits of worthies behind are inscribed with their names below. Top row from left to right: Alfred the Great, Edward the Black Prince, Shakespeare, Francis Bacon, Milton, Locke; lower row (left to right): Newton, Dryden, Pope, two heads partially obscured by the children, Reynolds. The rolled paper behind the vase of flowers has the words 'Sic Transit Gloria Mundi'. Northcote never exhibited this subject at the Royal Academy.
