This cassone may have held vestments and other ritual garments and was probably kept in a sacristy. It depicts the descent of the Holy Spirit as described in the Acts of the Apostles, 2: 1–4. The tongues of fire appear rather incongruously above the heads of the Virgin Mary and the Apostles. Mary's presence is not mentioned in the Acts, but is traditional. Here the event takes place in open country, though in the Acts it is specifically stated that it happened in a house. Though there is much Flemish influence in the picture, the cassone is generally thought to have been made and painted in Italy.
