In the background, an army carrying bayonets marches from left to right under a cloud of dust. At the centre in the foreground, a soldier sitting on a black horse is seen from behind. He is pointing to the left with his left hand and holding his sword and the reigns in his right. He is wearing an elaborate helmet and epaulettes. To his left, a woman sits on the ground next to an overturned cart. She is trying to collect its spilt content into her apron and is looking to the man on horseback. Injured people lying on the ground are partially visible in front of the horse. They are attended to by another woman. A churn (?) stands in the lower right corner. Tenniel\'s initials are in the lower right corner, Swain\'s signature is on the lower right margin.
