The picture depicts 'The Way of the Cross' and the procession has just emerged from the walls of Jerusalem on the way to Calvary. Some pedestrians and a horseman have gone on ahead and appear in the distance (right). The procession is lead by two Roman soldiers on horseback. One carries a banner, and one carries a lance, symbols of the piercing of the side of Christ. In the bottom right-hand corner a group of two women, a child and a dog look on, seemingly indifferent or ignorant of what is going on – a touch of everyday life. Christ has just fallen under the cross and is being helped by Simon of Cyrene (a peasant who favours us with a rear view – a typical Bassano touch) and by a turbaned gentleman. From the bottom left Saint Veronica approaches stealthily with a towel with which to wipe the face of Christ.
