A larger than life bronze horse standing on a three-metre-high stone plinth, which is the first national memorial dedicated to the millions of UK, Commonwealth and Allied horses, mules and donkeys lost during the First World War. A time capsule has been buried beneath the statue. Describing the process of creating the work, Leyland says: 'I spent four years from receiving the commission to finalising the bronze at Black Isle Foundry, Nairn, solemnly learning about the First World War, drawing more than 200 sketches, reading and searching the internet, so that the war was part of me to interpret and transfer feeling into the monument, not as an onlooker or outsider, and to be able to portray this solemn monument with the greatest dignity and esteem for those animals recalling their suffering and hardship.
