This delicately executed roundel and its companion 'The Angel of the Annunciation', from the same studio, probably come from the gables of a small altarpiece. They appear to be by the Master of the Golden Gate (whose name-piece is at Houston), an artist close to both Orcagna and Jacopo di Cione. Some art historians would see this master as identical with the Master of the Ashmolean predella, or with Jacopo di Cione, but neither argument is conclusive.
