This is an outstanding example of the type of portable tabernacle produced for private patrons in fourteenth-century Italy. The subject matter allows for meditation on the conception, birth and death of Christ.

The Florentine painter Bernardo Daddi began his career as one of Giotto’s apprentices. He was especially praised for his small-scale works, like this triptych. The shimmering gold and expensive pigments combine with Daddi’s delight in details to produce an exquisitely finished work of rare beauty.
