This painting is a close copy of 'The Madonna and Child' by Anthony van Dyck at Dulwich Picture Gallery, though the present work is enlarged on all four sides and shows more of the column.

Edward Fancourt entered the Royal Academy schools as a portraitist in 1819 and exhibited only two portraits there: 'A Young Lady' (1820) and 'A Lady in her 82nd Year' (1821). in 1825, the year of this copy, he was working at the RA's School of Painting. The RA records that he won a silver medal in both 1824 and 1825, so it is possible that the present work was given this award.
