Sutherland initially offered to repair the original unicorn on the Mercat Cross for £400 in 1970 but said he would be unable to make a new one due to poor health. Although initial estimates were much higher, he eventually made the new one in 1971 for £575. At the same time the stonework on the cross was dressed down and the finish restored. The original medieval unicorn is now in the McManus.
