Muirhead Bone was appointed the first official war artist, serving with Allied forces on the Western Front and for a time with the Navy. Glasgow born Bone contributed his ‘On the Clyde’ series to a publication of lithographic prints produced for ‘The Great War: Britain’s Efforts and Ideals’. These 66 prints were produced by the British government in 1917 artistic propaganda with the aim of encouraging a war-weary public and raising support for the war effort. Bone returned to his role as War Artist in 1940 during the Second World War.
