This print shows the Holy Family escaping into Egypt when King Herod killed all the babies in Bethlehem. Its frame was commissioned by the Ancoats Museum from Ashbee's Guild out of admiration for their work. C. R. Ashbee founded the Guild of Handicraft to provide people in East London with training in traditional skills of craftsmanship. Hunt's painting had proven popular in their district when it was shown there just after its completion. The leading critic John Ruskin praised the work: the Guild have illuminated his words on their frame.
