Glass painting was a popular technique in the nineteenth century. The method involved initially painting the highlights, followed by the main subjects and background, in reverse of the conventional order. Unfortunately, the artist made a small error and did not reverse the name Thetis on the side of the ship, so that it appears to us as mirror writing.
