John Richardson Gauld was a portrait, landscape and mural painter and he also produced lithographic prints. Born in Gateshead, he lived for a number of years in London and studied at the Royal College of Art, before moving north to Huddersfield in 1920 and eventually settling in Bolton in 1932. He was a member of the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, and this painting was bought in 1950 from the first exhibition held here by members of the Academy.
