Here a girl practises her violin in front of a mirror. The green baize-lined case is placed prominently on the chair. The inclusion of the mirror and the emphasis on the girl’s awkward stance, the placement of her feet and the rounding of her shoulders, suggests that the practise is more concerned with her posture as opposed to the music. She is perhaps a new student then, only just starting to learn how to play. Dorothy King studied at Hornsey School of Art and briefly at the Slade School of Fine Art. She began painting professionally after the Second World War and in 1947 was elected to the Royal Society of British Artists before becoming temporary keeper of its galleries in 1959. From 1961 to 1974 she was keeper of the South London Art Gallery.
