A life-sized male figure of a steel worker dressed in protective clothing and safety hood. He holds a metalworking tool in his hands.

Melbourne was commissioned by the Shelton Steel Action Committee to design the Steel Man statue in 1974 to support the (failed) campaign to save the Shelton Bar steelworks from closure. The statue was unveiled and presented to the museum by Lord Beswick on 17th September 1976. In 1980 it was moved to the Broad Street site next to the museum and now forms an important part of City's Cultural Quarter sculpture trail that includes the Reginald Mitchell ( also designed by Melbourne) and Arnold Bennett statues.
