An interior scene. A man dressed in a dark frock coat stands with his back to the viewer in the foreground on the left side. He has his left arm behind his back and holds a rapier in his right, its point turned downward. A housemaid is about to walk into the room through a door on the left. She has her hands lifted in front of her in amazement and looks shocked at the man standing opposite her towards the right. He has his teeth bared and his arms slightly raised with his fists clenched. He has a moustache and receding hair. He is in his shirt sleeves and looks aggressively at the other man standing opposite him. His rapier lies in front of him on the ground. A window with a long curtain is partly visible in the background on the right.
