Early in his career Millet painted a remarkable series of female nudes. This cabinet painting of 1847–1849 depicts the lovers Paolo and Francesca, whose doomed souls are described in Dante's Inferno as 'across the sky in long procession trailing'. Millet may have been influenced by Ary Scheffer's academic painting of this subject which was well received at the 1835 Salon. Formerly in the distinguished collection of Henri Rouart, this work was purchased by Gwendoline Davies in 1912.
