A finely detailed starboard-broadside view of the ship 'Alceste' under nearly full sail to windward on the port tack. 'Alceste' was 160 feet long, 30ft 8in. in the beam, 19ft 6in. deep in the hold and of 677 tons. It was built in 1867 by McMillan at Dumbarton, on the River Clyde, for H. Patten of Greenock, to trade between the Clyde and the West Indies.

The painting had a previous attribution to James Fulton Pringle, who was born in Sydenham, Kent, in January 1789 but practised as a ship portraitist in New York from at least 1828 to his death in 1847. He might have painted the only other 'Alceste' in Lloyd's Register – a 281-ton Greenock-built barque of 1839 – but not this one and the source of the error (or confusion) is unknown.
