It is said that Farington was slightly colour blind, which may account for the sombre tones of this work, enlivened only by the scarlet jacket of the figure on the left. Dating from the 1780s, this painting shows the view from the River Avon up towards the Royal Crescent. At that time, this stretch of river was well outside the city centre. There were a few buildings along the Bristol Road, but the Royal Crescent was at the edge of the city.
